Clinical immunology and Rheumatology is a study of the immune system via host defence mechanism and thorough understanding of diseases that affect joints. Immunologists are responsible for diagnosis, prevention, treatment and assessment of immunological conditions like various kinds of allergies, autoimmune diseases whereas rheumatologists are responsible for treating joint diseases like osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis etc. however, rheumatologists are not equipped to perform surgeries. With continuous growth in the research field of internal medicine, this discipline has managed to establish its place in medical science. Much research paper on rheumatology has found the negligence of Rheumatoid arthritis patients in seeking medical assistance. To overcome this challenge, improved rheumatology care and immediate need of awareness of internal medicine are demanded.  

DM in clinical immunology and Rheumatology is a thoroughly structured and highly supervised course. The purpose of the course is to provide intensive didactic information and first-hand practical experience of inpatient and outpatient basis training in this field of medicine. It is aimed at students wishing to pursue a career in the speciality of internal medicine. The course is designed to prepare the students in all aspects of clinical immunology and rheumatology along with its allied subspecialties of rheumatic diseases, medical orthopaedic and rehabilitation, osteoarthritis, autoimmune rheumatic disease, neoplastic diseases, allergic diseases, host defence mechanism, organ transplantation, immune diagnostic, immunosuppressive therapy, immune regulation, and many other subjects. With the growing number of complications in the immune system, it has become important to specialize the learners in the essential principles of immunology so that they can render their consultative assistance too. It is expected that during the course the students will gain proficiency in many aspects of medical science and will be able to cater to the needs of the patient in alliance with the various national health programmes in the field of internal medicine and professional ethical practices. The curriculum is designed in such a manner that it demands participation in thesis, clinical audit, seminars, journal clubs, case conferences and discussions, pathology sessions, radiology classes, combined round and practical exposure of first-hand knowledge and theories of teachings. The curriculum also provides additional competency in interpreting and examining various pathological complications like hip pathology, spinal pathology, shoulder pathology, etc, diagnosis of laboratory tests, management of rheumatology unit, along with great observation skills, soft skills, negotiating and managerial skills. Overall, the course prepares the students for a highly skilled job through both intensive didactic lectures and advanced training in all facets of internal medicine.

The course can be taken by the candidates who have completed MD in medicine or paediatric from a recognized university. Admission is on the basis of candidate’s performance in entrance exam. The duration of the course spans 3 years. A career in this field is very promising as one can seek employment in sectors like government hospitals, private clinics, biomedical research, agriculture, nursing homes, medical universities and many more. The job roles offered are internal medicine consultant, professor, immunologist, public health manager, physician, researcher, and many others.
