The obstetrician/gynaecologist is the primary caregiver for women, providing pregnancy and childbirth-related services..

The obstetrician/gynaecologist (also known as an OB/GYN doctor or simply an OB/GYN) is the primary caregiver for women, providing pregnancy and childbirth-related services. He or she is also the primary caregiver for female patients in general, providing health care to women throughout their lives, including examination. The Department has many Accredited Research Centres, with about 300 staff and 300 postgraduate students. There are two important areas for research and related articles. First, large population databases are used to identify vital predictive features associated with human pregnancy, such as intrauterine growth restriction, preterm labour and perinatal death. This is applied epidemiology on its most superficial level – translating knowledge of the biological process into evidence-based effective interventions to reduce perinatal mortality. The second area focuses on the development of mathematical models that predict human pregnancy characteristics. A model development strategy is used to translate theory into a quantitative representation of dynamic processes. In the second part of this review, we will discuss genetic and epigenetic regulation of placental function with emphasis on how they coordinate implantation and early placentation. We will pay particular attention to the immune-endocrine interactions and comparative aspects between term and preterm placentas. The goal of the work is to understand a woman's risk for the development of endometrial and placenta tumours that are associated with a high risk for fetal loss, infertility and pregnancy-induced hypertension. In turn, this knowledge will enhance our understanding of hormone-mediated effects in the uterus that are important to women's overall health.
