Microbiology is that the study of microscopic organisms like bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. Microbiologists also study the immune system function in humans and animals. This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry of microorganisms, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microorganisms, including the host response to those agents. And this may include the understanding of drug resistance. The study of microorganisms is complex and involves a wide range of scientific disciplines. When you hear the word ‘microbiology,’ you probably think about science books and DNA. But did you know that microorganisms affect our lives every day? Also, the word ‘microbiology’ comes from Greek words meaning ‘small life.’ Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms. Studying how different substances interact with microorganisms is a great way to better understand these microbes. Did you know that there are 10^27 bacteria on Earth, and they outnumber every other living thing? If you were to count all the bacteria present in just one mammal (the human body) at any one time, it would take you 5 months to do so! And yet all of this is achieved by studying tiny creatures.
