Students need to have acquired a diploma from an authorized university.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Lab Medicine is an advanced education that emphasises independent thought, creativity and original investigation. Graduates serve society as leaders and innovators in research or direct patient care at academic institutions, health care centres, and private practice settings. The Doctoral program in Lab Medicine is a 3-year full-time program. Clinical rotations occurring during the first two years provide students with a structured learning experience. The quality of your clinical education will be enhanced by the availability of clinical technologists with graduate-level training, as well as academic faculty who are knowledgeable in technology and practice. The Doctoral program in Lab Medicine is intended for students with experience in a clinical laboratory environment. Students will learn and apply advanced haematology, chemistry, microbiology and flow cytometry to diagnose disease processes. Experiences with the surrounding community-based hospitals will augment the academic core of the curriculum. The program's first two years will be supported by clinical rotation experiences (called Integrated Practice Experiences or IPE). Students will rotate through 4 different hospitals during the second year of their program. The Clinical Laboratory department at UF Health is one of the busiest and most academically challenging in the country. The Lab Medicine doctoral program provides a rigorous interprofessional graduate medical education in teaching hospitals, medical schools and research institutions. The program offers full clinical training opportunities to our students as members of the clinical teams.

Clinical academic medicine is a very competitive field. Most people undertake their PhD later on in their career after they have been recruited to a training program. If you have a PhD in this, it will greatly enhance your chances in your career in academic medicine. However, it is more about the quality of the program you go into, rather than the length of the program. The majority of clinical academics do not have an honours degree or even a master's degree. The majority will have completed a PhD or undertaken further training in research before applying to clinical academic positions. This means that getting good entry positions is an honour. This course will provide an opportunity to consolidate your basic knowledge of clinical academic medicine before embarking on a PhD programme, enabling you to be in a position to maximise your chance of success. It is also designed for those who have already begun their PhD programme but would like an overview of the subject.
