Transfusion medicine or Transfusiology is the branch of medicine that encompasses all aspects of the transfusion of blood and ensures that its use is safe and effective. For the past decade, transfusion medicine has been a rapidly evolving speciality as well as an exciting and rewarding field. The Division of Transfusion Medicine and the Transfusion Services Laboratory at Children’s National Health System is proud to be able to meet the transfusion needs of all of our patients. Transfusion medicine is the scientific discipline that encompasses all aspects of blood transfusions, including transfusion medicine about transfuses, transfusion therapy about patients and users, and transfuses health. A blood bank physician takes care of the blood supply and donor/patient safety. They are also responsible for blood utilization. In addition to demonstrating a thorough knowledge of blood banking, a physician who specializes in blood banking/transfusion medicine must be able to perform each step of the donation process safely. As an internist- blood banking/transfusion medicine physician, you are responsible for the safety of donors and recipients. You also work with a team to replenish blood supplies in the event of a shortage.
 
Their physicians are highly skilled at monitoring blood supplies, donor/patient safety, and utilization. A blood banker or transfusion specialist oversees the donation and transportation of blood from hospitals, other facilities, and people in the community. He or she maintains inventories of frozen blood and blood products and contacts patients to complete paperwork before a blood donation. Mild reactions like hives and itching may occur during the transfusion or several days or more after. Fever may also occur.
While blood transfusions are generally considered safe, there is a slight risk of complications including fever and allergic reactions. Blood transfusions are safe and effective. The most common reaction is an allergic reaction, which includes hives or itching and fever. If you or a loved one is considering a blood transfusion, the chance of complications is small. Although reactions to the actual transfusion are uncommon, mild side effects like fever and itching can occur.
 
Gain experience in a vast array of adult and pediatric transfusion medicine throughout the UofL Health hospital system and affiliated teaching hospitals. These hospitals support cardiopulmonary surgery, solid organ and bone marrow transplantation, adult and pediatric trauma, neonatal and pediatric programs, and an HLA laboratory. The trainee will gain comprehensive experience and training in adult and pediatric transfusion medicine throughout the UofL Health hospital system and affiliated teaching hospitals. These hospitals support cardiopulmonary surgery, solid organ and bone marrow transplantation, adult and pediatric trauma, neonatal and pediatric programs. Through trainee rotation, students become familiar with adult and pediatric transfusion practices throughout UofL Health and other affiliated teaching hospitals, providing the experience necessary to hone skills and knowledge of the field. These programs include cardiopulmonary surgery, solid organ and bone marrow transplantation, adult and pediatric trauma.
