Lab medicine is a well-defined medical field and a means for patient attention that is practised in all specialities. It is based on underlying notions that dictate the proper use and review of laboratory analysis. Lab medicine encompasses various main fields like haematology, clinical chemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, and anatomical pathology. Instances of routine tests conducted in labs include the measurement of glucose in the blood to confirm diabetes, examining cystic fibrosis test for abnormal growths and identification of blood groups for blood transfusions. Lab medicine training demands a combination of directed lectures and continuous support of its policies during clinical turns. The modern period of fundamental biomedical sciences has created an abundance of proteomic, genomic, and postgenomic information. As a linking branch, a significant hurdle and occasion for lab medicine is to make these improvements to the diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic care of subjects. Lab medicine is an important segment of healthcare transmission systems all across the globe. A large percentage of regular patient attention is reliant on a broad array of test results from the lab. Highly qualified lab staff analyse subject samples to guarantee the outcomes are precise, yet convenient for medical decisions with respect to time. The clinical team utilises the test results to aid in medical diagnosis, treatment and supervision.

The MD Lab Medicine course is consistent with the three-pronged lab theory of an exemplary tertiary care hospital connected to a medical college. Division I is similar to the lab medicine unit itself. The second division incorporates specific labs of pathology,  biochemistry, microbiology, endocrinology, haematology, and immunology departments while the third division is the state of the art research bureau lab in the medical college institution. The formulation of an MD lab Medicine course would aid in the presence of Lab physicians as the first respondent for both practitioners and patients thus assisting in the treatment and supervision of subjects. The course equips students in various ways such as acquiring information regarding the natural body systems and pathological foundation of illnesses. It teaches the identification of morphological ailments in cells and tissues from lab results. It enables scholars to gain information about the importance and rationale behind choosing diagnostic investigations in the control of diseases. 5. understand the specific biochemical principles which are being used to measure or determine test substances. The scholars are enabled to decipher the lab results in a clinical setting and with awareness of abnormal or critical measurements. Students will be able to gain insight about disease regulation methods and schemes to the range of steps to be practised in special cases like when extensively drug resistant TB, multi drug resistant TB, Vancomycin resistant enterococci are isolated in the lab. The main topics covered in the course are the organization of the laboratory, instrumentation, haematology & transfusion medicine, clinical immunology,  anatomic pathology, molecular biology, clinical physiology,  investigations of infectious diseases and quality control & quality assurance.

MD-Lab Medicine is a 3-year full-time course whose applicants should have finished MBBS and 1-year compulsory internship/house surgeoncy from an institution recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The main job designations involving scholars of MD-Lab medicine are medical laboratory technician, clinical laboratory technician, phlebotomist, histologist, histotechnologist, professor of lab medicine etc.
