Geriatrics or geriatric medicine is a specialisation that concentrates on the health concerns of aged people. It strives to improve health by anticipating and curing ailments and inabilities in elder adults. There is no fixed age at which subjects may be under the care of a geriatrician or geriatric physician, a doctor who concentrates on the supervision of elderly patients. Rather, this decision is decided by the specific subject’s requirements and the availability of a professional. It is vital to note the contrast between geriatrics, the care of aged patients, and gerontology, which is the research of the process of ageing itself. In India, geriatrics is a comparatively new practice whose MD training can be commenced after finishing MBBS. Geriatrics deviates from regular adult medicine as it concentrates on the sole needs of the aged person. The elderly body is different physiologically from the more youthful adult body, and throughout old age, the deterioration of various organ systems begins to reveal. Past health problems and lifestyle preferences lead to a diverse array of illnesses and conditions in various people. The display of symptoms depends on the surviving healthy resources in the organs. People who smoke, for instance, use up their respiratory system resources early and swiftly. Geriatricians contrast between conditions and the effects of natural ageing. For instance, renal dysfunction may be a component of ageing, but kidneys malfunctioning and lack of control over urinary urges are not. Geriatricians strive to tackle illnesses that are present during normal ageing. Geriatricians concentrate on attaining the subject’s highest preferences in the circumstances of complicated persistent conditions, and on sustaining function. Various enterprises of the Government of India viz: national program for health care of the elderly (2011, 2014),  national policy on older persons (1999)and maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens act(2007) have highlighted the necessity for the outline of quality and specialized health care of the elderly residents.  Specialized education in the area of gerontology and geriatric medicine has been converted as need of the hour to accomplish the state's ambitions in old age care. 

The course equips one to complete a thorough assessment of an older person, comprising mental state and perception, diet and health for surgery in an in-patient, home or societal setting, including day dispensaries, to diagnose and handle those with persistent illnesses and inability in various settings. The general framework of the program contains,  basic Sciences: the biology of human ageing, the impact of ageing on various organs,  immunology and epidemiology of human ageing, Clinical Geriatric Medicine: geriatric medicine, general medicine, pulmonary medicine, endocrinology, haematology, oncology gastroenterology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, rheumatology etc. Related Specialities: orthopaedics, urology, psychiatry, pre - and post-anaesthetic observation and supervision, Preventive Geriatrics: rehabilitation, end of life care, legal, ethical and economic aspects.


MD Geriatrics is a 3-year full-time postgraduate residency (M.D) training that can be joined after finishing the undergraduate education of MBBS from a Medical Council of India recognized institute. Additionally, applicants must have completed a one-year internship. The geriatric speciality, in India, is in its beginning stages. The population of India is on the rise. Concurrently, India has a limited number of geriatric experts. Hence the scope for geriatricians is vast. Geriatrics, in turn, as a separate discipline of medicine is yet to be fully ascertained in India. Globally, geriatric medicine has been trusted as a medical specialisation in most advanced countries. This scenario cannot be said about developing nations. Most developing nations are on comparable lines with India where this discipline of medication is just starting to surface. However, the prospect of geriatric medicine is bright and specialists are going to have a very lively tomorrow.
