  • 1 Colleges

Total joint replacement and joint reconstruction are different kinds of surgical procedures..

Total joint replacement and joint reconstruction are different kinds of surgical procedures. In joint replacement, the affected joint is completely or partially removed and replaced with artificial implants. In cases of joint reconstruction, a surgical procedure is done to repair the existing joint. Out of these two, joint replacement therapy is more advanced and more frequently used and less invasive too. With the growing number of disorders like Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory conditions and trauma, the significance of trained specialists in these surgical procedures is making rapid strides. Replacement surgery is usually done on the knee, hip or shoulder. In the case of total replacement, mobility is more and recovery time is less. Whereas in the case of partial replacement, complexities are more and mobility is less. The method and choice of the treatment directly influence the post-operative care of the patient. The opportunities are diversifying in this field with the advances in imaging, radiology and surgical skills. Therefore, to a student contemplating a career in orthopaedic surgery, the increasing number of research papers that are done in this field has propelled the need for trained specialists in the field of joint replacement and joint reconstruction specialists.
