Hepato Pancreato Biliary surgery is primarily for the diseases that affect livers, biliary tree and pancreas. It involves the diagnosis of the benign and malignant pathologies of these organs. As the nature of the disease is very complex, it requires great expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Majorly the diseases are cancer-related and with the increasing cases of pancreatic cancers, it has become vital for surgeons to gain expertise and deep knowledge of these organs. HPB surgery works on a collaborative approach, involving working with other specialists in the field of medical oncology, interventional radiology gastroenterology. Several advancements in surgical procedures have propelled the significance of minimally invasive, personally curated, less risky and most effective procedures. The treatment now consists of various advanced procedures such as robotic pancreatic surgery, ablation procedures, Extended Liver Resections, ALPPS procedure etc. The future scope also seems to be very promising. 

M.Ch in Hepato Pancreato Biliary Surgery is a thoroughly counseled and highly supervised course. The purpose of the course is to provide intensive didactic knowledge and direct knowledge in this field of HPB Surgery. It is aimed to train students with adequate skill sets and knowledge in the speciality of HPB Surgery. The course is designed to prepare the students in all aspects of HPB Surgery along with a deep understanding of the concepts like Physiology and Anatomy of The Pancreas, the binary tract, the liver, and duodenum; imaging techniques; traumatic injuries; physiology of neoplasia; organ procurement and preservation. As the number of complexities has grown tenfold in the past years in the field of surgery, it has become important to specialise the surgeons in the vital principles of surgery procedure. So that they can render their consultative assistance too. During the course, the students are expected to gain mastery in many important learning experiences in surgeries along with knowledge of ethical challenges in surgery including Patient’s rights, Patient Safety, Informed Consent, confidentiality of the Patient. Research work, seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, radiology conferences, CME attendance, surgio pathological conferences will also be part of the curriculum. The curriculum also provides additional competency in clinical training. These include imaging techniques, interventional radiology, liver transplantation, acod reduction procedures, laparoscopic, palliative procedures, cholecystectomy, abdominal wall incision and other scientific techniques.  The training provides adequate skill sets to the students by being posted in different clinical units like OT, OPD, emergency ward etc. Overall, the course prepares the students for a highly skilled job through both intensive didactic lectures and clinical and laboratory training in all facets of HPB surgery.

The course can be taken by the candidates who completed MS in General Surgery or equivalent from a recognized university of Medical Council of India (MCI).  A career in this field is very promising as one can seek employment in sectors like government hospitals, private clinics, research centres, military hospitals, medical universities and many more. The job roles offered are consultant, medical advisor, researcher, GI specialist, Surgeon, and many others. The specialist can also opt for the option of further studies.
