Gynaecological Oncology is a subspecialty in oncology, dedicated to women's health. They are trained to treat women with gynaecological cancers and other disorders related to the female reproductive system. This involves the identification, diagnosis, assessment, prevention and treatment of cancerous and noncancerous illness of the female reproductive tract. Many research studies have shown that women fare better if they are given the adequate assistance of gynaecological oncologists. Early detection of any kind of malignancy in the female reproductive system helps in alleviating the progression of the illness. Recent development and research in medical science have changed gynaecological medical practices to a large extent. These include the emerging role of BAG3 protein, innovations and advances in radiation therapy including IMRT, SABR, use of ultrasound for brachytherapy and many other advances. And with the growing advancement in the imaging techniques, the future scope also looks very promising.

M.Ch in Gynaecological Oncology is designed to train healthcare specialists in the female reproductive system to ameliorate the growth of life-threatening gynaecological cancer cells and to delay their progression. It is a thoroughly guided and supervised course. This requires the expertise of students in concepts like cancer of the cervix, ovarian cancer, cancers of the uterine corpus, cancer of the vulva, vaginal cancer, uro-oncological surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, breast cancer surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, palliative care and others. The structure of the course is to provide both the knowledge of didactic lectures and the experience of practical projects. The training program will focus on frequently performed complex therapeutic procedures. These include radiotherapy, chemoradiation, interventional radiology procedure, true-cut biopsy, Appendectomy, diagnostic cystoscopy, vaginoscopy, vulval biopsies, laparoscopy and many other scientific techniques. Thus the program enables the students to get the necessary proficiency in understanding the basic principles and diagnosis as well as management of medical emergencies, along with administration of gynaecology cancer-causing factors using highly advanced techniques and medical tests. The curriculum also ensures the participation of students in treatment planning sessions, logbook clinical audit, seminars, journal clubs, case conferences, viva, grand round presentations and practical exposure of first-hand knowledge and theories of teachings.  It is expected that during the course the students will gain expertise in many aspects of gynaecological oncology and will be able to cater to the needs of the patient in alliance in compliance with professional ethical methods. Overall, the program develops the students for a highly qualified job through both intensive didactic lectures and clinical activity in all parts of gynaecological cancer.

The course can be taken by the candidates who have completed MBBS followed by post-graduation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology or equivalent from a recognized university. The course can take 3 years to get completed. A career in this field is very promising as one can seek employment in sectors like government hospitals, private clinics, research centres, medical universities and many more. The job roles offered are consultant, gynaecologist oncologist, professor, gynaecologist specialists, researcher, and many others. Moreover, depending upon the interest of the student, he/she can even apply for higher studies.
