Endocrine surgery is a subspecialty in surgery, primarily focusing on the surgery of the endocrine organs. These include adrenal glands, thyroid glands, and parathyroid glands. Endocrine surgical treatment focuses on the identification, assessment and prevention of endocrine diseases. Some of the common endocrine diseases are diabetes, hyperthyroidism, adrenal cancer, thyroid cancer, Cushing syndrome and many more. The surgeons perform various surgical procedures like adrenalectomy, thyroid lobectomy, parathyroidectomy to treat the patients.  Many notable studies have been happening in this field during recent times that has led to the growing importance of endocrine surgeons in India, for example, the ratio of people affected with hypothyroidism is 1/10, and the prevalence of second highest world's diabetes cases in India. The role of Indians in this discipline is remarkable especially in the research material on goitre and research paper on the India diabetes prevention programme. This indicates a very promising future opportunity for Indian endocrine surgery.

M.Ch in Endocrine Surgery is targeted to develop the specialists with the required skill sets to perform surgery on the endocrine glands. The course is designed to prepare the students in all aspects of the endocrine system along with its allies subspecialties of the physiology of specific glands like thyroid, the pituitary, parathyroid gland, adrenal medulla, adrenal cortex, endocrine gastroenteropancreatic system; interpretation of histological and cytological specimens; postoperative care; knowledge of treatment options; many other concepts. As one can witness the numerous complexities post-treatment, it has become important to specialize the learners in the fundamental principles of surgery so that they can be equipped well to render their consultative service too. It is expected that during the course the students will gain proficiency in many aspects of Endocrine Surgery and will be able to cater to the needs of the patient while taking into consideration various legal and ethical issues. The curriculum is designed to ensure students participation in treatment planning sessions, logbook, clinical audit, seminars, journal clubs, case conferences, viva, grand round presentations and practical exposure of first-hand knowledge and theories of teachings. The students are given specialized clinical training in biopsy methods, the prognosis for follow up, screening in familial disease, replacement therapy, suppressive thyroxin technique, radioisotope therapy, surgical strategies and other techniques. The course can be taken by the candidates who have completed MS in surgery or equivalent from a recognized university. The M.Ch programme takes 3 years to get completed.
