Neuropathology is a high yield branch of pathology that involves the diagnosis of the nervous system tissues .

Neuropathology is a high yield branch of pathology that involves the diagnosis of the nervous system tissues through the biopsies of muscles as well as brain tissues.it is a completely different discipline from neuropathy that is concerned about nerves disorder especially in the peripheral central system. On the other hand, Neuropathology is primarily concerned with the analysis of central nervous system tissues and various brain-related diseases majorly based on the tumour treatment regimen. Major work of the neuropathologists includes the diagnosis and critical examination of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson, Alzheimer and Huntington. Most forensic neuropathologists are equipped to do autopsies and provide consultation service to specialists of other domains. Neuropathologists are also involved in the analysis of the brain removed at autopsy. Their work is dedicated to surgical neuropathology and autopsy neuropathology. Much notable research has been happening in this field of medicine during recent times. Thesis include the introduction of molecular genetic testing, diffusion tensor imaging in the diagnostic tests, recognition and use of neuropathology in autism spectrum disorder, and advanced technological innovations like sleep functional analysis. Thus the constant strive for accuracy in diagnostic tests has propelled this discipline in many areas.

DM in Neuropathology is a thoroughly guided and highly supervised course. The purpose of the course is to provide intensive didactic information and first-hand practical experience of laboratory training in this field of medicine. It is aimed at students wishing to pursue a career in the speciality of the mental health medical system. The course is designed to prepare the students in all aspects of Neuropathology along with its allied subspecialties of brain tumours, neurocytology, congenital malformation, neuropathy, neurosurgery, neuromicrobiology, neurovirology, myopathology, hypoxia and stroke, neuro-oncology, neurodegeneration, neuromuscular disorders, neurosciences, neuro infections, neurodegeneration, neuroradiology, peripheral neuropathy, cerebrospinal fluid, demyelinating disease, trauma and many other concepts. With the growing number of complications in these cases, it has become important to specialize the learners in the essential principles of the nervous system so that they can render their consultative assistance too. It is expected that during the course the students will gain proficiency in many aspects of medical science and will be able to cater to the needs of the patient in alliance with the national health programme in the field of mental health and professional ethical methods. The curriculum is designed in such a manner that it demands participation in, diagnostic analysis, research work, symposia, clinical audit, slide seminars, journal clubs, case conferences and discussions, viva, grand round presentations and practical exposure of first-hand knowledge and theories of teachings. The curriculum also provides additional competency in technical training along with great observation skills, soft skills, organizational skills. Overall, the course prepares the students for a highly skilled job through both intensive didactic lectures and advanced training in all facets of neuropathology.

The course can be taken by the candidates who have completed MD or DNB or DPM or MS or its equivalent from a recognized university. The duration of the course spans 3 years. A career in this field is very promising as one can seek employment in sectors like government hospitals, private clinics, research centres, diagnostics laboratories, medical universities and many more. The job roles offered are neuropathology consultant, professor, neuropathologists, researcher, and many others. And if one wants to enrich one’s understanding of this field, the option of further studies is always open.
