  • 5 Colleges

Interventional radiology is a specialized branch under radiology that deals with the aspect of imaging and interventional procedure.

Interventional radiology is a specialized branch under radiology that deals with the aspect of imaging and interventional procedure using minimally invasive techniques like x rays. Interventional radiology is committed to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer through medical imaging guidance like CT SCAN, MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and others. It follows the rule of minimally invasive procedure and thus inhibits the surgery treatment regimen.  Interventional radiologists make small incisions generally using needles or catheters for the treatment of the affected area. Common examples of interventional radiology include angioplasty, tumour ablation, embolization and thrombectomy. With the advancement in the technological field and the emergence of new techniques, this discipline has paved its way to the forefront of the medical science system. These research studies include the application of EEG-MRI seizure disorders, the introduction of imaging techniques like DCE, analysis of Alzheimer disease through neuroimaging and the use of phosphorus spectroscopy in the analysis of brain tumours and many more. The future scope of the discipline, being a relatively young branch of medicine is also very promising due to the scope of growing numbers of ongoing research activities in interventional radiology.

DM in interventional radiology is a thoroughly guided and highly supervised course. The purpose of the course is to provide intensive didactic information and first-hand practical experience of laboratory training in this field of medicine. It is aimed at students wishing to pursue a career in the speciality of the neuroimaging and radiology medical system. The course is designed to prepare the students in all aspects of neuroimaging and interventional radiology along with its allies subspecialties of neurology, the general aspect of pathology, hepatobiliary, physics of radiology, microbiology, radiographic photography, radiographic techniques, physics of radiodiagnosis, anatomy, physics of angiography equipment, background radiation, general principles of radiology, and many other concepts. With the growing number of complications in the cases, it has become important to specialize the learners in the essential principles of interventional radiology so that they can render their consultative assistance too. It is expected that during the course the students will gain proficiency in many aspects of medical science and will be able to cater to the needs of the patient in alliance with the various national health policies, regulatory bodies on radiation protection and professional ethical methods. The curriculum is designed in such a manner that it demands participation in treatment planning sessions, neurodiagnostic and interventional performance practice, research work, logbook clinical audit, seminars, journal clubs, case conferences, viva, grand round presentations and practical exposure of first-hand knowledge and theories of teachings. The curriculum also provides additional competency in thrombolysis, varicocele embolisation; diagnostic techniques like cerebral angiography, myelography, diagnostic angiograms; operation of machines like CT, MRI, ultrasound, reading of computed tomography; ratio pharmaceuticals; diagnostics arteriography; particulate embolisation and transarterial liquid embolisation. Overall, the course prepares the students for a highly skilled job through both intensive didactic lectures and practical projects in all facets of interventional radiology.

The course can be taken by the candidates who have completed MD in Medicine or its equivalent from a recognized university. The duration of the course spans 3 years. A career in this field is very promising as one can seek employment in sectors like government hospitals, private clinics, research centres, laboratories, medical universities and many more. The job roles offered are consultant, interventional radiology technologist, professor, clinical radiologist and many others. And if one wants to enrich one’s understanding of this field, the option of further studies is always open.
