Some of the vital venereal diseases are HIV infection, genital scabies, chancroid, and syphilis. Various types of pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi are responsible for the transmission of the disease. The most important way to tackle this disease is diagnosis and prevention. Prevention is the primary goal of it. And with the advent of complications and their impact on fertility, the deep study of this field of medicine has been recognised and given an important place in medicine. India still occupies third place in the contribution of HIV cases and with the changing trend of the profile of STI, Venereologist has a vital role to play in tackling this trend. Much notable research has been done in this field during recent times. And with the introduction of new preventive and therapeutic techniques, incidences of bacterial Sexually transmitted infections have shown a decline. But the possibility of emerging drug resistance can not be ignored. 

Diploma in Venereology Diploma is taught as a single course in some institutes whereas, in other colleges, it is part of Diploma in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy. It is a thoroughly guided and highly supervised course. The purpose of the course is to provide intensive didactic knowledge and practical training in this field of medicine. It is aimed at students wishing to pursue a career in the speciality of the Venereology medical system. The course is designed to equip the students in all aspects of Venereology along with its allies subspecialties of the science of Clinical approach to the patient of sexually transmitted disease, Anatomy of Male & Female Genitalia, Epidemiological aspects of STDs, Viral STD, Bacterial STDs, Chlamydial infections, Syndromic Management of STDs, STDs in Reproductive health & Pediatric, and many other subjects. With the growing number of complications in the cases, it has become important to specialise the students in the basic principles of venereal diseases so that they can render their consultative service too. It is expected that during the course the students will gain proficiency in many aspects of medicinal science and will be able to cater to the needs of the patient in alliance with the National Control Programmes of STDs & HIV and the professional ethical practices. The curriculum is designed in such a manner that it demands participation in research work, seminars, journal clubs, case presentations and discussions, viva, grand round presentations and practical exposure of the first-hand knowledge and concepts of teachings. The curriculum also provides additional competency in Prevention, Counselling & Education of different STDs including HIV, patient care, practice-based learning, soft skills, organisational and managerial skills. Overall, the course prepares the students for a highly skilled job through both intensive didactic lectures and practical training in all facets of venereal diseases.

The course can be taken by the candidates who have completed their 10+2 with biology as a primary subject. The admission is based on the entrance exam scorecard be it state level, or national level. The length of the course is 2 years. After the completion of the course, a student is required to obtain a certificate from the state medical council to practice as a specialist in either a private institution or a government institution. A career in this domain is a very rewarding one as they can seek very high profile jobs as venereologist.
