In the field of medicine and surgery, Ophthalmology is the specialisation that concentrates on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting and associated with the eye. Specialists in ophthalmology are the ones that take care of any and every ailment associated with the human eye, from infectious ones such as conjunctivitis, up to and including surgical procedures that deal with the eye, such as cataract, and retinal disorders. Ophthalmology specialists differ from optometrists and opticians. While an optometrist specialises in vision care by means such as eyesight testing, opticians are professionals trained in the designing, verification and fitting of sight/vision enhancement equipment such as eyeglass lenses and frames, contact lenses, etc. As one of the most sensitive organs in the human body, ailments associated with the eye aren’t uncommon, meaning that ophthalmology specialists are always in demand. Recent years have seen great advancements in the field of, with ground breaking progress in the treatment of even some of the more chronic eye disorders including but not limited to total blindness caused by genetic disorders. This has also contributed to a rise in demand for ophthalmology specialists.

Diploma in Ophthalmology is a certification course that trains students and skills them up in fields such as but not limited to the analysis, physiology and diseases related to the eye. The programme focuses on courses like visual life structures, ocular anatomy, physiology, optics, genetics, pathology and practical ophthalmic science. As a diploma course in medicine, the programme also provides papers that make students aware of the anatomy and physiology of the human body as a whole. Courses covered also include ones that take a deep and closer look at embryology of the eye, physiology of vision, colour vision and accomodation, neurology of vision, tear circulation, the microbiology of organisms that cause various eye disorders, such as bacteria, and biochemical aspects such as details of Vitamin A, glucose, thyroid and its metabolism. As part of the Diploma in Ophthalmology, students also get trained in various aspects of pharmacology and various medicines used in the treatment of eye-related ailments. As suggested by the name of the course itself, Diploma in Ophthalmology is a diploma certification course. All candidates with a 10+2 certificate from a recognised educational institute in the country cover the minimum eligibility requirement for the diploma. The programme follows a selective, exclusively merit-based admission process, aided by an entrance test to go with the score in the qualification exam. Based on the institute, candidates may also have to attend an interview, performance in which will also be taken into account for the admission. The course duration varies from 2 to 3 years, based on how the institute carries out the course on a semester basis. On completion of the course, students have an array of job prospects which may include but are not limited to super speciality consultant, OT technician, as well as teaching, research and training positions.
