Diploma course in Health Education was started to provide training for health specialist workers and to the paramedical workforce of the country. It is a scheme of the Ministry of Health and Family welfare to ensure the well-being of people. However, the course was later renamed as Diploma in Health Promotion Education. Health Education is a science that deals with creating a healthy environment by promoting disease prevention programs through knowledge-driven hygienic behaviour changes. Health education banks on the principles of education that ensures promotion, maintenance and restoration of health. It is the science of educating individuals and making them aware of the importance of hygienic behaviour. It addresses different aspects of health for example sexual health, physical health, spiritual health, emotional health. The idea behind this is to educate people about the severity of the diseases if not noticed at the earliest. It encourages a healthy environment by creating awareness about how disease can be prevented by adopting some trivial changes in lifestyle and how one can also stop it from community spread. Recent data proves the importance of recognizing and minimizing the infection from becoming deadly. The involvement of health education specialists in implementing control program is tremendous and will only increase with time. 


Diploma in Health Education is a course that involves educating the importance of behavioral changes. It enables the student to get an understanding of basic health science for the successful conduct of health Promotion Education Programmes. The course is designed to equip the students in all aspects of health Education along with deeper understanding of health policies and programmes, Social Science, Health Promotion Education, dynamics of population, family welfare education, behavioural Sciences, National Health Programmes, statistical methods and research methodology. The curriculum also emphasizes the demographics techniques and research methods to tackle the problem at the root level. The curriculum includes seminars, assignments, workshops, laboratory works, field visits and case discussions. It is a highly guided and thoroughly supervised course which prepares the students for real-life scenario. Concurrent Fieldwork is carried out to provide exposure and first-hand experience to the reality existing at the ground level. Fieldwork can be either carried out in rural or urban slum and expects the student to make an evaluation of existing conditions and implementation of the required program for health restoration. It is an intensive training course. Overall, it is a holistic package driven by both theoretical and practical learning. Thus preparing students to apply classroom learnings to actual field situation.

The course can be taken by candidates who have completed 10+2 from a recognized state board. After completing the 12th standard, student is required to give the respective entrance exam designed for this course. The course is taken for a duration of one year. A career with a diploma in Health Education is in higher demand due to the increasing importance of health restoration in both rural and urban area. Various job profile roles are offered after successful completion of the program. One can also opt for higher studies to enhance the range of opportunities related to this discipline.
