Cardiology is the field of study pertaining to the treatment of disorders in the heart and blood vessels.
Cardiology is the field of study pertaining to the treatment of disorders in the heart and blood vessels. It includes diagnosis, coronary artery disease, electrophysiology (branch of study dealing with electrical properties of cells and tissues), valvular heart disease and heart failure. Cardiology can be seen as a speciality of internal medicine, which deals with the prevention and treatment of internal diseases. Even though the term cardiology may seem broad, the training pathways for treating adults and children are different. An adult cardiologist is often simply referred to as a cardiologist while a cardiologist who is in charge of taking care of children are referred to as a pediatric cardiologist. Pediatric cardiologists are not trained to take care of adults. It should also be noted that a cardiologist is not the only job role that is associated with cardiology, it will also include roles such as cardiology technician. The field of cardiovascular medicine is a rapidly evolving field in terms of both diagnoses as well as therapy. This evolution can also be attributed to many technological advancements in medical science such as pacemaker, wearable technology, Artificial Intelligence, cardiac imaging to name a few.
A diploma in cardiology seeks to impart the students with the fundamental concepts of cardiac care, diagnosis and treatment methodology. It should be noted that the degree is different from the educational course required to become a qualified cardiologist. A diploma in cardiology focuses on the aspect of technical assistance related to cardiology. The course equips the students with the necessary expertise required to understand the complexities involved in heart and cardiac related matters. In addition to theoretical exposure, students are given hands-on training on vascular cardiac equipment and associated techniques. It also teaches the students to understand the usage of advanced life support systems such as pacemakers and other cardiac-related procedures. In addition to academics, professional and interpersonal skills are also imparted to the students on the course of their study. The initial phase of the curriculum includes basic concepts of subjects such as human anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, communication skills and IT skills. The subsequent curriculum focuses on subjects such as cardiology, microbiology, pathology and pharmacology to name a few. Cardiology is not just confined as a single subject but spread out on different modules such as cardiovascular investigation, medical electronics, nuclear cardiology, etc. Clinical trainings are also offered in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, etc. The course follows training based learning and includes regular seminars and discussions. Established universities can also offer the students hospital field visits and exposure to clinical and research labs which can spark the research interest in students.
The eligibility for applying to the course is that the candidate should have completed class 10th from a recognized board. The duration of the course is 1-3 years depending upon the university one is enrolling in. A diploma in cardiology can pave way for many job roles such as electrocardiography technician, cardiovascular technologist, medical sonographer and cardiac catheterization technologist. Many colleges in India offer diploma course in cardiology.
