Diploma in Basic Medical Sciences (Pharmacology)

  • 1 Colleges

Pharmacology is the study of action and biological properties of chemicals and drugs.

The study of basic medical sciences is the field of medicine that deals with the adept understanding of molecular, cellular, and organization of the systems of a human body and the mechanisms that it uses biologically to help adapt to changes in the environment and fight diseases. These courses would help students have an understanding of one of the many basic medical sciences. It involves the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. There are three major subcategories, such as anatomy, pharmacology, and physiology. Pharmacology is the study of action and biological properties of chemicals and drugs. It deals with any agent that modifies the functioning of living tissues. It would be the work of a pharmacologist to search for and identify drugs and targets based on an understanding of the nature of diseases and develop a mechanism of drug action to build, therapies and cures. This field is branched with chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology, toxicology etc. Pharmacology should not be confused with pharmacy. Pharmacology deals with how drugs interact with biological systems to affect the function and their reactions on the human body. However, pharmacy is a biomedical science that deals with dosage, dispensing, preparation and effective and safe use of medicines.

Diploma in Basic Medical Sciences (Pharmacology) will provide you with a thorough understanding of the discovery, development and testing of drugs, as well as their importance in the future of medical research. The student will learn about mechanisms of drug action, drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination, drug activity and chemical structure. They will also have an understanding of the effect of drugs on body systems, and the toxic effects of drugs. Pharmacology focuses on two major areas; pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. The formers deals with the movement of biological systems based on the drugs and the latter deals with the effects of these drugs on the biological systems. Pharmacokinetics shows us about the absorption, distribution, metabolisation and excretion of chemicals and pharmacodynamics talks about the interaction of these chemicals with biological receptors. The course would initially help the student understand basic fundamentals in medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, the research methodology etc. and would then move on to help gain an understanding of the general principles and systemic methodologies and would finally cover experimental pharmacology, bioassay and recent advancements in the field.

As in the case of many post-graduate diploma courses, the admission to the Diploma in Basic Medical Sciences (Pharmacology) is a course also offered to candidates with MBBS after having completed compulsory internship and certification that they are registered with the Medical Council of India or any other of the state medical councils. Admission is done based on the merit secured by the students in the national level post-graduate medical entrance examination. This is a special course spanning a duration of 2 years that acts as a fundamental building block in the pursuit of a career in different disciplines of medicine be it surgical or non-surgical specialities or in the movement towards research and clinical medicine. A Diploma in Basic Medical Sciences (Pharmacology) offers good job opportunities for medical professionals where job satisfaction is a given in this branch of medicine.
