Reproductive medicine is a branch of medical science that concerns with the study of human reproductive system. It deals with the prevention, treatment and prognosis of different reproductive conditions. Reproductive medicine banks on the knowledge of reproductive anatomy, endocrinology and physiology. It also carries important aspects of molecular biology, biochemistry and pathology. Reproductive Medicine also touches on other concepts such as family planning, birth control, reproductive system diseases and also sexual dysfunction. Many notable research studies had been happening in this field during recent times. Future research scope in the field also seems bright with regard to the developments underwent in this field. The advancement of modern medicine has paved way for many breakthroughs in reproductive medicine which include artificial reproductive techniques (ARTs) that serve as accepted medical treatments dealing with human infertility. Some examples of ARTs include In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Artificial Insemination (AI) and embryo transfer. Recent data prove that treatment techniques like IVF are gaining wide social acceptance than before and giving options to think of pregnancy in broader aspects.

D.M in Reproductive Medicine/M.Ch in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery is a subspecialty course that falls under the domain of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It is aimed at students wishing to pursue a career in the subspecialty of Reproductive Medicine. The course is designed to equip the students in all aspects of reproductory medicine along with its allied subspecialties of urology, endocrinology, radiology, clinical psychology, embryology, genetics and andrology. It enables the students to get the necessary proficiency in understanding the basic principles and diagnosis of evidence-based management. Evidence-based management decisions stem from critical thinking merged with the best evidence available, which can be in the form of information, facts, data or hypothesis. The curriculum also emphasizes the methodologies of clinical and basic research pertaining to the field. The course will also help the students to gain proficiency in many clinical investigation techniques such as Ultra Sound Sonography (USG), Computer Tomography (CT) scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to name a few. The nature of the course will be in-service training which includes clinical responsibilities and emergency duties. Didactic lectures, case discussions and grand rounds will also be part of the programme curriculum. All training modules are designed to cater for the demands of the course which includes relevant working knowledge in anesthetic techniques, soft skills required, detailed anatomical understanding, surgical skills and understanding regarding good surgical techniques. Overall, the course curriculum enriches the student in both theoretical and clinical exposure encompassing the area of human reproduction.

The course can be taken by candidates who have a Medical Council of India (MCI) - recognized postgraduate qualification in Obstetrics and Gynecology or for candidates having equivalent Diplomate of National Board (DNB). The course duration is 3 years. A career in Reproductive Medicine is a rewarding one and also in higher demand due to the rapid increase in the number of In Vitro Fertility (IVF) centres all over India. The program will also enable the candidate to function as a consultant in Reproductive Medicine.
