Microbiology is a field of study pertaining to living organisms that are not visible to the naked eye. This comprises bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, algae, and prions, generally termed as microbes. These microorganisms perform a key role in nutrient cycling, bio decomposition, weather change, food decay, disease-causing, and biotechnology. Due to their versatility, microorganisms can be set to work in several ways like the production of life-altering medicines, pollution cleaning, preservation of perishables, and manufacture of biofuels, Microbiologists research microbes, and some of the most significant developments that have supported the world we live in are a consequence of the research of famous microbiologists, such as Edward Jenner and his vaccine that countered smallpox, Alexander  Fleming and the discovery of penicillin, Barry Marshall, identifying the link connecting  Helicobacter pylori and stomach ulcers, and Harald zur Hausen, who found the link between Papilloma virus and cervical cancer. Microbiology studies have been and remain to be, a focal point to answering many of the contemporary global yearnings and hurdles, such as sustaining food, water, and energy for a robust population on livable earth. Microbiological studies can also aid in solving big enigmas such as ‘Does life exist elsewhere in the Universe?’. MD in microbiology provides the holder the chance to work at science labs and pathology labs.  An MD  in microbiology enables you to operate in microbiology-related enterprises like dairy, pharmacy, distilleries, breweries, etc. and also enable you to pursue further research. Students who finish their Ph.D. can take up tutoring at universities and post-graduate colleges. They can also take up post-doctoral research. This field of study also covers similar paths for professions like bacteriology, mycology, virology, parasitology, and medical microbiology.  All these areas help in identifying the treatment and cure for various diseases in one or the other way. Many fields such as Medical, chemical, water industry, research, nanotechnology, etc. have interest in microbiology professionals due to their capability to regulate and recognize critical circumstances. A microbiologist can innovate novel diagnostic kits, create new medications, educate, investigate, etc. Contemporary global advancements are also responsible for a renewed interest in microbiology.
MD in Microbiology equips a student to manifest proficiency as a clinical microbiologist. It teaches the student to apply the principles of clinical microbiology in various clinical settings to contribute to diagnostic and curative problems along with preventive measures. Microbiologists are enabled to play a central role in hospital contamination limitation practices, comprising forming antibiotic policy and precise management of biomedical garbage. This course also helps in establishing good clinical microbiological assistance in a hospital and society in the areas of immunology, bacteriology, parasitology, virology, and mycology. Subjects of importance are general microbiology and immunology, bacteriology, mycology virology and parasitology and applied microbiology.
MD Microbiology is a 3-year full-time course. Eligibility for the course is an MBBS degree from a reputed university recognized by the medical council of India. Admissions for such courses are on the basis of counseling after passing entrance tests depending on the institutes. The applicants must complete their one-year internship program before applying for the program from any recognized hospital in India. The major job prospects include Environmental microbiologist, analytical chemists, food quality assurance scientist, clinical laboratory technologists, food microbiologist, materials scientists, medical microbiology and biomedical scientist.
