General medicine is a medical practice that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of internal disorders. Medical practitioners concentrating in general medicine are called physicians in commonwealth nations. Physicians are proficient in the management of patients who have uniform or multi-system infections. They care for hospitalized and mobile patients and may play a significant role in education and research. As general medicine patients often require complicated examinations, physicians do much of their work in hospitals. Physicians often have subspecialty interests in illnesses affecting specific organs or organ systems eg:-Neuro or Cardio Specialists. MD General Medicine centres on studying, diagnosing as well as curing general health problems or diseases such as cold, cough and nausea. Topics included in the course are general medicine applied to the field of public health, health education, genetics, maternal and child health rehabilitation, social science, maternal and child health rehabilitation, occupational health, and public health administration etc. Successful general medicine practitioners interested in additional research in the field may go for pursuing M.Phil. or PhD. They are fruitfully hired in government as well as private sectors in fields such as State medical colleges, State public service commissions, military services, biomedical companies, medicine manufacturing companies, research institutions, railways, etc. Such practitioners are selected in roles like a professor, resident medical officer, obstetrician,  gynaecologist, physiologist, bacteriologist, general surgeon, general physician, broad specialist, product manager, general medicine specialist, casualty medical officer etc.

The purpose of MD in general medical education is to produce a highly skilled practitioner who can recognize the wellness needs of the person, society and display professional obligations morally and in keeping with the aspirations of the nationwide health system. The course teaches the student to comprehend most of the issues concerning general medicine, which is required to be repeated at various levels of the health care system. Doctors become aware of the modern progressions and advancements in general medicine and would have gained a sense of scientific curiosity and would be leaning towards the postulates of research methodology and epidemiology. Physicians shall have acquired the basic skills in educating medical and paramedical workers.  At the end of  MD in general medicine, the student shall be equipped to understand the value of general medicine in the circumstances of the health needs of the society and the national preferences in the health sector. They diagnose and control the bulk of the situations in general medicine on the evidence of clinical evaluation and duly selected and performed studies. They are trained to improve abilities in utilising instructional techniques and procedures as relevant to the schooling of medical or nursing students. The major components of the curriculum are clinical epidemiology, applied basic science knowledge, recent advances and biostatistics, diseases relating to general medicine. Practical subjects include ward patient management symposia and seminars. 

MD general medicine is a 2 to 3 years full-time course in medicine. The qualification criteria for the candidates is a MBBS degree from an institute recognized by the medical council of India with a 1-year mandatory internship. Some of the major job titles are bacteriologists in command of examining and studying various kinds of microbes in stages of transformation and mutation, physiologists who operate in physician’s departments. They observe and screen individual organs and frameworks, for example, cardiovascular, respiratory, to investigate and cure physiological clutters and incurable ailments.
