The field of medicine that studies and treats diseases and conditions by the means of operative procedures is known as surgery. A procedure falls into the category of surgery when there involves the cutting of tissues or closure in earlier wounds on a patient. A surgical procedure usually requires a surgical team, a sterile environment, and the usage of anesthesia and antiseptic precautions. There are different methods of surgeries, including invasive and non-invasive procedures and even laser and radiosurgery. A surgical specialization usually involves the training of a candidate into the different aspects, and body parts that are involved (neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery) before finally involved in the study of a specific specialization. Plastic surgery is a branch of medicinal surgery, that specializes in the alteration, restoration, or reconstruction of the human body, especially the skin. This speciality has its expertise in two major fields, which include, cosmetics and reconstructive surgery. Plastic surgery usually works by applying the transfer of healthy skin tissue which is known as skin grafting. These grafts can either be, autografts where they are taken from the recipient itself, or allografts where the grafts are taken from a donor of the same species, or xenografts where the grafts are taken from a donor of a different species. Reconstructive surgeries, being contrasted with cosmetic surgeries are done in situations where this is a need to restore/improve functioning to normalcy or to restore to a normal appearance of body parts that have been damaged by the process of a disease or underlying conditions, or in general anything that could improve a patient's quality of life.

The course follows a residential study process, and the students are taught about all forms of causes and conditions and also methods to treat and restore them. As it involves cases where there is no precedence, plastic surgeons are often required to think on their feet and innovate as they perform. The course covers topics such as the history of plastic surgery and its broad scope at present, the growth and development changes in the face, and the anatomy of the facial skeleton. Conditions such as cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies, anatomy and functions of the skin, craniosynostosis, hypertelorism, craniofacial microsomia. embryology of head and neck. Treatments such as split skin grafts and full-thickness skin grafts, their take and subsequent behavior, local skin flaps, temporomandibular joint dysfunctions., pedicled skin flaps and tubes, and also fractures of nose, maxilla, mandible, zygoma, orbit – early management
